India’s sub-4 meter SUV segment continued to dominate the automotive landscape in February 2025, registering a total of 68,147 units sold, reflecting a modest 1.94% month-on-month (MoM) growth compared to January. While Maruti Suzuki Brezza and Tata Nexon maintained their leadership, key shifts in market dynamics hint at a competitive battle among manufacturers.

Maruti Brezza Retains Top Spot, but Market Share Declines
The Maruti Brezza retained its crown as the highest-selling sub-compact SUV, with 15,392 units sold in February, marking a 4.37% MoM growth. However, the brand witnessed a year-on-year (YoY) market share drop of 5.46%, reflecting growing competition in the segment. Despite the decline, its average sales over the past six months remain strong at 16,346 units.
Tata Nexon: A Close Second
The Tata Nexon, a perennial favorite in the segment, secured the second position with 15,349 units sold, a slight dip of 0.31% from January’s figures. The Nexon’s YoY market share saw a 3.08% decline, yet its six-month average sales indicate robust demand.
Hyundai Venue Struggles with a Significant Decline
Hyundai Venue, another key player, reported a steep 8.83% MoM decline, selling 10,125 units in February. Its market share slipped marginally to 14.85%, and its YoY market share also saw a slight contraction by 1.04%. With an average six-month sales figure of 10,228 units, Hyundai will need to revamp its strategy to stay competitive.
Mahindra XUV 3XO Gains Ground
Mahindra’s XUV 3XO, the refreshed version of the XUV300, sold 7,861 units in February, with a slight MoM dip of 7.01%. However, its YoY market share has seen an impressive 4.03% growth, showcasing the brand’s resurgence in the sub-4 meter SUV space.
Kia Sonet Bounces Back, Syros Gains Traction
Kia Sonet posted a solid 5.61% MoM growth, selling 7,598 units. However, its YoY market share declined by 5.05%, indicating fierce competition in the segment. Kia’s latest entrant, the Syros, reported 5,425 units, slightly down from January. Given its relatively new presence, its performance in the coming months will be crucial.
Skoda Kylaq: The Surprise Performer
One of the most surprising trends was the Skoda Kylaq’s staggering 192.75% MoM jump in sales, reaching 3,636 units. Though its market share is still small at 5.33%, this spike suggests increasing consumer interest in the brand’s latest compact SUV offering.
Nissan Magnite and Renault Kiger Continue to Struggle
Both the Nissan Magnite and Renault Kiger struggled in February. While the Magnite recorded 2,328 units (-3.16% MoM), Renault Kiger faced a sharp 42.64% drop, managing only 433 units. The declining figures indicate potential headwinds for these models as competition intensifies.
Looking Ahead
The sub-compact SUV market continues to see dynamic shifts, with new entrants like the Kia Syros and Skoda Kylaq shaking up the leaderboard. While Maruti Brezza and Tata Nexon still dominate, their market shares are under pressure from emerging contenders. Automakers will need to innovate and enhance their value propositions to stay ahead in this intensely competitive segment.
