The decision was made by lawmakers in the United States in favor of Mahindra with respect to Roxor design built by Mahindra. The American vehicle giant Jeep has lost both its face and a crucial legal dispute.
Since 2018, Mahindra has been offering a low-cost off-road vehicle that is almost an exact clone of the Jeep Wrangler. This car is sold in the United States. Jeep believes that Mahindra is guilty of blatantly ripping off the design of the Wrangler, which is why the company has spent years attempting to get Mahindra copycat cars banned from sale in the United States.
It has been said by industry professionals that the iconic status of the Jeep Wrangler’s design, which sprang from the efforts of the United States military during World War II, makes it as recognizable as the Porsche 911 sports car or the Volkswagen Beetle. According to a decision made by the Eastern District Court of Michigan, Mahindra is permitted to continue developing, marketing, and distributing the Roxor model beyond the year 2020.
The legal team for Jeep contended that the Mahinda Roxor is a “nearly identical copy” of the Jeep, pointing out that both vehicles have design aspects in common such as a boxy body form with flat-appearing vertical sides and a rear body that ends at almost the same height as the hood.
It was suggested by the International Trade Commission that the import and sale of Roxor components be prohibited beginning in June of 2020. Mahindra stated that the 2018 and 2019 models of the Roxor were no longer being manufactured, and that the 2020 model had an updated appearance with more design modifications scheduled to take place.
In May of 2021, Jeep prevailed in a court lawsuit brought against Mahindra in Australia. The Indian automobile manufacturer promised not to import a counterfeit version of Jeep’s famed off-road vehicle over the course of the litigation, which led to Jeep’s victory.
